Malta’s horrible apartment

Hi all,

Initially we had planned to go to Malta for 4 or 5 months. But after looking for accommodation and seeing that everything was excessively expensive for the poor qualities that they had, we decided to go for just a week.

All we saw on Airbnb and booking.com were ugly apartments with “granny decor” that cost between 2,000 and 3,000 euros a month.

When we decided to go for just one week, we ruled out booking on Airbnb because in addition to being expensive, they allowed smoking inside the accommodations and charged for services separately. As I already told you in other posts, in a tourist accommodation all the services must be included.

On booking.com we saw several hotel rooms around the St. Julians area, and we opted for an apartment that looked good in the photos and had no bad reviews.

To check-in you had to go to the District Hotel 300 meters from where the apartment was located.

We wrote to see if we could check-in earlier and they answered that “they would do their best”, but when we arrived, the receptionists were unfazed.

The reception of the District Hotel was dirty to the point that it had not been cleaned after breakfast. In addition, the receptionists got on and off their masks as they pleased.

At that point, I was expecting the worst of the apartment we had rented.

The constructions in Malta are ugly and there you don’t see “Europe” anywhere. It was a mix of the worst of southern Spain or Portugal with Cairo.

The entrance to the building was minimal, the corridors very narrow and the ceilings very low.

The apartment had a decoration that tried to be “elegant”, but it was the opposite.

The bathroom was the cleanest (compared with the rest of the apartment), but it smelled like plumbing.

The kitchen was badly equipped, so it was useless.

The dining room table was dirty, and the chairs were the worst. They were the kind of chairs that are covered in fabric (which is a huge mistake for tourist accommodation) and they were disgusting: stained and full of sand.

The sheets on the bed were of very poor quality and everything had hair on it.

I left the dining room chairs on the terrace and did not touch them again for the rest of the stay. Also, I covered the sofa with the bedspread because if the chairs had sand, imagine how the sofa would be.

The floor was also not clean, and you could see the dirt in the corners that the broom had not reached.

They did a mid-stay cleaning (without warning) and all they did was change the bedding and towels.

The funny thing is that the apartment had a washing machine, but there was nowhere to hang clothes, so we had to improvise a clothesline on the balcony with the broom.

The windows had not been cleaned since the building was built.

In addition to the lack of cleanliness of the apartment, the Wi-Fi worked awfully and during the early morning guests from the other apartments could be heard yelling drunk.

In short, a horrible and very expensive accommodation. We paid almost 500 euros for 8 nights and it wasn’t even clean. I also must tell you that after spending all day looking at garbage and burning with heat, we were even happy to get to the apartment and turn on the air conditioning.
