One day visit to Trieste

Hi there,

Initially the idea was to stay the full two weeks in Venice and then on the weekends we would do one-day visits to other cities.

When the whole problem with the apartment we had originally booked in was finally resolved, we decided we’d better stay for a week in Venezia Mestre and another in a different city.

At first, we thought of Trieste because from there we could visit two more countries. Then the covid thing changed again and if we went to Croatia, they weren’t going to let us out anymore. So, instead of being based in Trieste, we decided to do just the one-day visit.

The trip to Trieste takes approximately 2 hours and we were already on the train before 7 am.

The landscape that you see along the way is quite beautiful and it is a visual bliss to see a clean sea after a week seeing the dirt of Venice.

When we arrived, there was no one at the station, so the tour was already starting well.

The architecture of Trieste is different from the typical you see in Italian cities; it is more from Nordic countries. In addition, the streets were clean, and the city gives you the feeling of spaciousness; It reminded me of Vienna.

When we were getting to the center there was a guy sitting on a bench crying and speaking in English. He had 7 police officers around listening to the story. He said that he had gone to the disco with his girlfriend, that they had quarreled, and the girl had left.

We heard the story and left. The funny thing is that then we found the guy everywhere crying and screaming. Very creepy.

As we wanted to go to the bathroom, we stopped at a cafe to have a cappuccino, and everything was very expensive. Another funny thing is that now I drink everything with a straw so as not to stain my teeth and in Italy when I asked for a straw to drink my coffee, they stared at me as if I were crazy.

The visit to Trieste was on a Sunday and there were no tourists, but all the bars were full of locals having an aperitif.

For lunch it was difficult to find a place that was open and that was not touristic. In the end, after walking and walking, we ended up eating two vegetarian dishes in an Indian restaurant.

We visited everything that appeared in the guide and the tickets to the sites were free. In Italy, after the covid, almost all museums had free entrance.

We also visited the port area and there are no beaches nearby.

After visiting Trieste, I think the decision not to spend a whole week there was right, one day is enough to visit everything. Maybe if you stay for a weekend, you can see the important things that are a little further away.
