Fethiye, the city that receives the most tourists in Turkey.

Hi there,

As I told you in the first post about Turkey, we ruled out making a base in Fethiye because we thought the beaches there weren’t very pretty.

One very early day we took the Dolmus to go to Fethiye. The ride cost 1.5 TL and it took us 20 minutes. The influx of tourists and the development of the city are noticeable since there were large supermarkets, shopping centers and a bus station.

Fethiye is a city steeped in history with very few old buildings preserved as it was devastated by an earthquake in 1958. The current city is located on the ruins of ancient Telmeso.

The first thing we did was look for the Lycian Rock Tombs dating back to 400 BC. C. and are very well preserved. These tombs are sarcophagi carved into the rock of the mountain that can be seen from almost all parts of Fethiye. These tombs were desecrated and robbed many years ago.

The main complex is not well protected, which is why many of the tombs are full of graffiti since, especially at night, there is no one watching. Vandalism is a big problem in Turkey for historical sites. The tomb of Amyntas stands out, which has an Ionic temple facade carved into the rock itself.

Most of the tombs cannot be visited as they are very high up and without any possibility of access.

Then we went to see the center of Fethiye and the bazaar. It was very touristy and more so because the cruise ships arrive here. It’s all full of jewelry stores.

There is a Roman theater, but we did not visit it because we had already seen a lot, and this is not the most important in Turkey. Besides, we had to be home at one o’clock to start working.

We ate a freshly made simit in a bakery and it was delicious; then we tried others on the rest of the trip, but we didn’t find any that were as tasty.

Having seen almost everything, we went to the bus stop where we drank the typical pomegranate juice while we waited for the Dolmus.

Fethiye is a nice city, but too touristy for our liking; in this sense, we prefer Ovaçic. It is also true that living in Ovaçic, we would have to go to Fethiye to do almost everything (doctors, paperwork, shopping, etc).
