Hi there,
Fethiye district was our first destination in Turkey. We decided to base ourselves in Ovaçic since the family of Diego’s friend rented us a house. We ruled out the city of Fethiye because the beaches looked uglier there.
The first thing is that this area has summer weather in October. The day after arriving, we walked down to Ölüdeniz beach, which is the most famous. The road was horrible since it was a highway downhill with cars passing by very close to you.
In this area there are 5 beaches:
- Ölüdeniz
Upon arrival you have on one side the boats with Turkish techno at full volume, on the other the people arriving in paragliding and the entire shoreline of the beach occupied by sun loungers.
The beach is made of pebbles and that is why the water has a wonderful turquoise color. The bad thing is that it is all full of cigarette butts and garbage in general. We went to the corner where the lagoon begins, which is the part where everyone goes. That part fills up right away and you don’t even have space to walk.
The good thing would be to have a backpack that you can put in the water and swim to the island in front or to the other beaches in the lagoon where there are no people.
- Nude beach
This is Ölüdeniz nudist beach, but no dolmus stops there. You must walk along the road and go down a ravine. When we were there, there was only a nudist gentleman and two fishermen.
The amount of trash was incredible for how small the beach was. Still, I think this was the one we enjoyed the most because we were pretty much alone.
We visited by chance because the last day in Kidrak they tried to charge us an entrance fee and we went to that one.
Most tourists simply stop by to see the beach from the boat and continue their way.
- Kidrak
It’s our second favorite because we would go to the far corner and that part was great.
The bad thing is the staff that works in the restaurant. One day we went by car, they wanted us to park where they wanted and pay 30TL. Another day that we went on foot, the guy wanted to charge us 8TL per person to access the beach. It’s not expensive, but what bothers is the attitude.
In the previous days no one had appeared to collect anything. If you’re going to charge me, let it always be, not when you wake up in a bad mood. Also, if you charge for beach access, at least clean it up.
- Kabak
This beach is an hour away by dolmus and there is less frequency of public transport than for Ölüdeniz beach.
The dolmus leaves you in a parking lot and you still must walk down for another 15 minutes. There is a lot of construction just before the beach and even a small supermarket because the area was full of shacks. There was also a hostel.
The beach was nice, although with bigger stones, so getting in and out of the water was a bit trickier. It is also typical to camp on this beach.
• Butterfly or Faralya
We read that this beach could only be accessed by boat because it was very dangerous to go down the valley. In one of our hikes we tried to go down. I thought that what we had read was exaggeration.
Supposedly the descent from where the Dolmus leaves you to the beach was one hour, but we saw that it would surely be around 3 hours. Imagine that we had already been walking for 5 hours from the house to there.
We started going down and in general it was scary because it was a narrow path, slippery and on the edge of the precipice. In another post I will tell you about this hike. The point is that we didn’t get to the beach, and we only saw it from above.
Initially we planned to spend 2 weeks in Fethiye and then move on to the Trabzon area, but in the end, we extended it and spent three weeks in total.
We could go to beautiful beaches with perfect temperatures and, we had several hiking trails. The bad thing and the reason I couldn’t live in Turkey is how unbelievably dirty the people are. In general, the Turks are friendly, but they live smoking and throw everything on the floor. You cannot imagine the incredible amount of garbage that was everywhere. In addition, they have the worst of the English and Russians tourists. We always try to do the less touristy things and get away from the crowd; even so, there was garbage even in the most remote places.
