An Airbnb with an exorbitant price in Medellín

Hi there,

As I told you in the last post, after the horrible experience we had at the Affinity Aparta Hotel, we had to run around looking for another accommodation and we only found something half decent on Airbnb.

It was a minimum loft that cost $500 a week (I got it a little cheaper because I had a discount coupon). An absurdly expensive price for the qualities and for the salaries that exist in that country. With $2,000 a month, you can find spectacular apartments in many countries of Europe.

When we arrived, the first thing we found was the typical of most Airbnb accommodations: lack of cleanliness. The surfaces were dusty, there were cobwebs in some corners and the floor was dirty.

The kitchen was poorly equipped, and all the kitchenware looked like it was from Barbie’s house. I asked the host for a regular size pot and pan, and she said she didn’t have any.

In addition, like all accommodations in Colombia, it was poorly insulated, so it was cold at night. I asked for a blanket, and she brought it, but as if it were a tortuous task. To top it off, the air conditioning only had the cold option.

When I went to use the blender, I found that it wasn’t working, and the host didn’t even bother to bring a new one.

The most absurd thing is that in addition to being a host who cared very little about the comfort of the guests, she gave me a half-bad review because “My multiple requirements made the stay difficult.”

I don’t know what you think, but for the price she charged, she could already go out of his way to bring me what I asked for. In addition to the fact that the couple of things that I asked for were basic that had to be in the accommodation.

This is another of the big problems with Airbnb: hosts think they are doing you a favor by renting you a mediocre and dirty apartment.

There I was seeing a little more how many Colombians really are. I realized that those who have some money, in addition to believing that they are more than the rest, are hypocrites.

I leave you the summary of my evaluation of the accommodation:

Pros

  • Well located with a couple of supermarkets within a 20-minute walk. The area seemed safe. This is important because the Poblado area is the only halfway decent thing in Medellin.
  • Wi-Fi connection was good and stable.
  • Enough shampoo, conditioner, soap, and cleaning products.
  • Good quality sheets and towels.
  • Auto check-in with password or using an application.
  • Security 24h (very necessary in Colombia).

Cons

  • Poor cleaning. The floor was dirty, the carpets were dirty, the couch and chairs were stained, the surfaces were dusty.
  • Extremely expensive for what it is.
  • Poorly equipped kitchen that does not have the basics to cook. The blender was broken and was not changed after notifying the host.
  • Poorly insulated against cold or noise (in Colombia there is too much noise)
  • The apartment does not have a washing machine. There is a laundry room in the building, and you must pay extra for the service: 6,000 COP to wash and another 6,000 COP to dry. The hostess never warned about this.
  • The accommodation has a desk, but not an office chair.
  • Hot water took 20 minutes to come out.
