Revisiting Porto and surroundings – Part 2

Hi there,

In a previous post I told you about the whole tour we did in and from Porto after we finished fixing up the house.

Here I am going to show you the places we visited in the summer of 2023.

Capela Senhor da Pedra

We went by bicycle, and it was around 39 km round trip. We left the house very early and the tour was pleasant since there were almost no people.

This route is impossible to do after 10AM because everything is so full of people.

We arrived at the Capela Senhor da Pedra before 8AM and there was already a group of retired people entering.

This place is always on Instagram, but it’s also nothing impressive. You arrive, you take the photo and that’s it.

Gardens of the Crystal Palace and Suarez dos Reis National Museum

We walked from the house to the Suarez dos Reis National Museum which is free for residents on Sundays.

I found it curious that they didn’t ask us for any proof of residency, they just took our word for it.

I didn’t find the museum to be anything special, but it’s fine to spend a couple of hours.

Then we went to the Gardens of Crystal Palace that we couldn’t see entirely in June 2021 when we visited the city for the first time because just when we arrived, it started to rain.

Admission is free and already at noon in mid-June, there were a lot of people. From some points there are good views of the city.

Viseu

We visited Viseu in July by bus which takes 2 hours.

In two hours, the city is covered perfectly. I also found it cleaner than Porto and without so much misery.

Worth it for a day visit, but not a priority if you have limited time.

Ponte de Lima & Sistelo

When we finally had a car, we picked up Luna and started in Ponte de Lima. The city is small and easily navigated in a couple of hours, but I found it idyllic.

As I have been commenting in previous posts, all the cities we visited from Porto were cleaner and more beautiful.

As there was no vegan restaurant, we bought some things at Lidl and went on a hiking trail through Sistelo.

This was the first day of summer when the temperature reached 30 degrees. After being all June and July between 20 and 25 degrees; That day I felt like I was dying, and we did a short route because I could not stand the heat.

Luna, who had spent all day with bursts of adrenaline, in two seconds that we stopped watching her, appeared covered in cow excrement. So, we had to make a stop at a well and another in the river to bathe her.

Foz de Sousa

One weekend, as we had rain and could not go paddle boarding, we looked for a route through Foz de Sousa, which was less than 20 minutes away by car.

I was pleasantly surprised because it has a beautiful windmill section.
