Hiking trails 2024

Hi there,

In today’s post I tell you about the hiking trails we did from summer until the end of 2024.

Quintandona

We had said that we were not going to do any more paddle boarding until the summer was over. So, the following weekend we organized to go hiking in the Quintandona area.

Since by the end of August Joãozinho was already coming to our walks and had gone running several times with Diego, we decided to take him to get to know the mountain.

As he is an abandoned dog and a bit traumatized, we did not know how he would behave if we tried to put him in the car.

At first, we forced him up and I was behind him, but he started to shake a lot, and I told Diego to stop and let him out of the car. Joãozinho was so nervous that he peed several times and even pooped.

The surprising thing was that he came back to the car and tried to get on top of it, but he didn’t want to get in.

We decided to leave him alone so as not to cause him more stress and he started to run after the car.

We stopped again and I put him in the front seat with me and although he was nervous, he became calmer and at one point, moved to the back seat.

At the beginning of the hike, he was a little disoriented because it was his first time, but he immediately got the explorer vibe.

The route was fine, but it was not exceptional like what we have seen in Açores and Peneda Gerês.

Poço Negro – 9km

We went to the Mau River and hiked to Poço Negro for about 9km.

Most of the time you go on a very narrow trail next to the river and at the end there is an almost vertical climb where you are almost climbing, holding on to a rope.

Most of the route is beautiful, although there is one waterfall that is dry. Perhaps it would be better to visit in winter or spring to see the well and waterfall at its best.

Pigeiros to Caldas de São Jorge – 10km

In mid-November 2024 we did this hiking route in Aveiro. We had a not at all typical winter day with 22 degrees.

We took Joãozinho with us, who was already getting used to getting in the car.

It was a circular route, but it had a lot of road section, so it is better to do a route of going and coming back through the part that is really nature.

Trilho das levadas de Mansores – 12km

We did this route at the beginning of December, when it was already cold in Porto.

There is a part of the waterfalls where everything is covered in green, which is spectacular. There are some parts where there are levadas, but it’s nothing like what you’ll find on a hike in Madeira.

Caminhos do Vale do Urtigosa – 12km

On December 22 we went to Arouca again.

The route was also beautiful, although we liked last weekend’s route better.

This day I was coming down with a horrible flu, so we didn’t take many pictures.

When we arrived, we parked the car on the street and a lady came out of a house to tell us that the neighbours were very troublesome and always threatened to call the police if they saw cars parked on the street.

The woman told us that we could put the car in her parking lot and our first thought was “that’s how horror movies start” and we were joking all the time that they were going to cut the brakes off our car or kidnap us.

She told us when we got back to let her know so she could open the gate and that there was no problem.

We got back around two in the afternoon, and she invited us to lunch. When we said no, she even offered us tangerines from her tree. We couldn’t believe there were still such nice people around.

Before the end of the year, I wanted to do a long route of 20km to close this post, but on December 22 I got the b flu and I spent 1 week in which I practically couldn’t move from my bed because of how bad I was. So, this was it for 2024.
